Norwegian Elkhounds have a documented familial nephropathy predisposition and are among the breeds affected by Fanconi syndrome, a renal tubular disorder that causes inappropriate loss of nutrients including glucose and amino acids through the urine. Affected dogs can lose weight despite eating normally, making consistent weight tracking an important tool for identifying when something is going wrong metabolically.
