Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers have a well-documented simultaneous predisposition to protein-losing enteropathy and protein-losing nephropathy, conditions where protein is lost through the gut and kidneys respectively. Both cause weight loss and decreased muscle mass despite normal or increased appetite. The breed is unique in that both conditions can occur concurrently, making weight tracking especially informative as a combined health signal.
