Alaskan Malamutes have a genetic defect in zinc absorption, predisposing them to zinc-responsive dermatosis, a condition where inadequate zinc availability affects skin, coat, and immune function. They are also predisposed to osteochondrodysplasia and an inherited nerve condition that can progress to laryngeal paralysis. Ongoing zinc supplementation is often required.
